The professional song on the Kuban has long traditions. The Kuban Cossack Chorus existed for more than a hundred years — since 1811 till 1920.

The tragedy of abolishing Cossack communities interrupted their creative activity. And only in 1937 when it was clear that the Second World War was inevitable the authorities had to favour partial revival of Cossack community and culture.

The Kuban Cossack Chorus was also restored to life. At different times it was run by G.Kontsovich, Y.Taranenko, P.Lysokpn, P.Miroshnichenko, V.Malyshev, S.Chernobai. Since 1974 the artistic leader of the Chorus has been Professor Victor Zakharchenko, folklorist and composer, laureate of the State Prize of Russia, People's Artist of Russia.

Now the Kuban Cossack Chorus is one of the leading and most popular concert collectives of the country. At the ÀÍ-Union competitions of Russian folk choruses it got first place in 1975 and 1984, it also was awarded the title of laureate and the first grade diploma. In 1987 it got the Order of People's Friendship which is considered a high state award. In 1990 it got the Ukrainian T.Shevchenko Prize.

The Kuban artists were warmly greeted by the audience of many countries of the world such as Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, FRG, Norway, China, Vietnam, Poland, Cze¬choslovakia and some others. The Kuban Chorus is a diplomante of the International Folklore Festivals in Bulgaria, France and Yugoslavia.

The traditional song folklore of the Kuban Cossacks — one of the biggest Cossack com¬munities in the history of Russia formed by the Black Sea Cossacks (former Zaporozhye), Don and Ekaterinoslavl Cossacks — is rather peculiar. Many scholars of folklore divide the song folklore of Kuban into two main styles according to their music and lyrics: Black Sea (or Ukrainian) and Linear (or Russian). These two song styles are presented on this disc.

All the songs are recorded and arranged for the Chorus by Victor Zakharchenko.
In 1990 on the basis of the Kuban Cossack Chorus the Centre of Folk Culture of Kuban was set up. Its aim is to collect, study and revive various cultural traditions of the Kuban Cossacks, their customs, traditions, costumes, crafts, decorative and applied arts. The Centre carries out research, publishing, concerting, pedagogical and educating work.

The Centre has an experimental school of folk art for children and an icon painting studio. The Centre holds folklore festivals, scientific conferences, it publishes the series «Folklore and Ethnography», collections of folk songs, manuals, records and videos.
