The Alexandrov Song and Dance Ensemble of the Soviet Army is a leading company of this kind. Its first appearance took place on October 12, 1928. The start of this artistic company was made by 12 people: a vocal octet, two dancers, one reciter and one bayan player (bayan is a Russian type of button-key accordion). Already at the middle of the 30s the Ensemble was enlarged uniting large male chorus, orchestra and dance group and became increasingly popular. At present time it numbers more than two hundred performers.
The Ensemble was named after Alexander V.
